Medical Musings, Health Hypotheses & Therapeutic Thoughts

A very important point. While the British tabloids are infamous for their sensationalist approach to headline-writing, this is a not just inaccurate journalism, it is irresponsible and potentially dangerous. Implying that those with mental health issues are not - and worse, never will be - capable of holding positions of responsibility; from parents to pilots to politicians; is a travesty. Many of us will have periods of depression, or anxiety, or [etc] during our lives. The suggestion that a surgeon who has successfully combatted depression should never be allowed to practice again is ludicrous. That a teacher who is anxious should resign is absurd. People already find it hard to speak out about their mental health issues, and the social stigma surrounding these topics will not be lessened by responses like these. If you want to talk to someone about depression or other issues, call Lifeline on 13 11 14 |
